Bernice L. Schumacher

Bernice L. Schumacher, 88, of Tripoli, died Friday, January 13, 2017, at her home in Tripoli.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli with Rev. Marilyn Sargent officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 17th at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday.

Bernice Lee, daughter of Wilhelm and Matilda (Bergmann) Biermann was born, July 23, 1928, at home in rural Bremer County. She was baptized August 12, 1928, and confirmed at St. John’s United Church of Christ-Siegel of rural Waverly. She received her early education at the country school, Douglas Township # 9 and graduated from Frederika High School in 1946. On November 12, 1948, she was united in marriage with Orville Schumacher at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Tripoli.  Bernice was a homemaker where she helped to raise her ten children. She was a long time member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary at the V.F.W. in Tripoli, where she was very active. Bernice enjoyed, embroidery, bowling, camping, playing cards, old western and television game shows, but most especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernice is survived by her six children, David Schumacher of Tripoli, Dennis (Lanell) Schumacher of Fredericksburg, Linda Schumacher of Tripoli, Dale (Christy) Schumacher of Fredericksburg, Brenda (Curtis) Gitch of Fredericksburg, and Debra (Donald) Johnson of Tripoli; nine grandchildren, Michael (Renae) Johnson, Patrick (April) Schumacher, Samantha Johnson, Sondra (Joe Morrison) Gitch, Melissa Schumacher, Brittany (Shane) Wibel, Karen (Jacob) Werner, Caleb Schumacher, and Halie Gitch, twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Drewis of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Orville who died in 1985, she was preceded in death by four children, Mary in infancy, Larry in infancy, Brian in 1984, and Allen in 2004; and two brothers, Harold and Erwin Biermann.

Remember what a kind person she was. Bowled with her many yrs ago. We lived on the North end of town too and would see her when we walked to town. She will be missed by many. Heaven got a beautiful angel. Prayers and sympathies to all the family and friends.

A friend from the north side . . . many memories of Linda babysitting me and my sisters. Lots of memories from church and some really great ones of several of the grandkids that I was able to teach in school and still get to interact with from time to time. My sympathy to each of you as you go forward without this special person in your life. Embrace all your great memories~
